The G 310 R and G 310 GS are the two small-capacity motorcycles that were supposed to help BMW Motorrad garner the figures for growth that it projected. India, the largest two-wheeler market in the world, was a big part of those plans. But now BMW has done an about-face and has said that the 310 twins will not be about numbers, but about quality “ something that BMW Motorrad is known for in markets globally. The styling of the BMW G310 GS draws influence from its elder siblings. The raised suspension, minimal bodywork, sleek profile and the upright seating should offer it the versatility of being a decent off roader while being comfortable on long hauls. The BMW G310 GS has mounts to fit a pannier luggage box on its tail. At the heart is the same 313cc single-cylinder liquid cooled unit from the streetfighter developing 33 horsepower. This engine gets a cylinder head which has been rotated by 180 degrees. The intake is in the front while the exhaust has been mounted under the seat. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with chain drive. The BMW G310 GS on specs rivals the Royal Enfield Himalayan, while KTMs own adventure bike based on the Duke 390 is expected to join the party in 2019. In reality, it competes with the Kawasaki Versys-X 300. However, with the pricing of the Kawasaki being what it is, there is no real rival to the G310 GS at Rs 3.5 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
