The R1250RT occupies the role of a sport tourer in BMWs lineup which was launched in India in September 2019. The motorcycle is meant for long-distance riding with extreme comfort, powerful engine and a host of electronics which is typical of a BMW.
The R1250RT is the successor to its smaller-displacement 1200cc sibling. Despite a larger engine, the touring machine remains unchanged on the cosmetic front. It continues to sport a large front fairing accompanied by a tall windscreen for efficient wind deflection. The handlebar, although it is clip-on, is easy to reach for a stress-free riding position. Adding to its comfort is a spacious split seat set up along with centre-set footpegs.
The large luggage rack and panniers on the R1250RT take care of the utility requirements while touring. Other interesting features include heated grips, central locking, tyre pressure monitoring, anti-theft alarm, dynamic ESA, cruise control and keyless ride.
Powering the sport tourer is a 1254cc, boxer twin engine producing 136bhp and 143Nm which is easily accessible, thanks to the new ShiftCam tech. This isnt a simple variable valve timing system that can alter the cam profile between two preset profiles; it can alter both lift and duration as required. There are also new injectors, oil jet cooling and a slipper clutch as standard. Dynamic Traction Control, Automatic Stability Control and Hill Start Control are all standard now. Semi-active suspension is on the options list.
The R1250RT competes against other sport tourers in the market such as the Ducati Supersport and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14R. It also faces competition from American touring motorcycles like the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and Indian Chieftain.
