Moto Guzzi is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer, known for making offbeat motorcycles, quite different from what the segment commands. With the California 1400, Moto Guzzi has created a retro cruiser which combines performance and luxury. Though the model harks back to the V7 model, it has been modernised to compete against the best cruisers in the market. The California 1400 is available in two versions, California 1400 Custom and California 1400 Touring. Both the motorcycles are powered by the same 1380cc 90 degrees V-twin engine producing 95bhp and 120Nm of torque.
The air-cooled unit gets ride by wire and is mated to a six-speed transmission through a shaft drive. The engine is rubber mounted in the frame to rid the bike of unnecessary vibrations. The California 1400 has been styled according to the companys traditional transverse engine layout with cylinders poking out of the fuel tank. It is very ergonomically designed with top notch quality components. To make it suitable for long rides, the California 1400 gets an upright set of handlebars for a slightly more relaxed riding position. The California 1400 is equipped with modern electronics and features borrowed from Aprilia.
It gets a traction control system managed in three levels, three riding modes, electronic cruise control and ABS. The California 1400 Touring gets extra equipment like a windscreen, hard saddlebags, an engine guard, different handlebars and a saddle for passengers. The California 1400 Custom gets adjustable rear shock absorbers. The California 1400 is available in two paint schemes – basalt black and mercury gray. They go up against the Ducati Diavel, Triumph Thunderbird Storm and other cruisers from Harley-Davidsons stable like the V-Rod, Fat Boy and the Heritage Softail Classic among others.
