Goans own the most number of cars per household in India, says survey
According to a National Family Health Survey, 7.5 percent of all Indian families own a four-wheeler whereas 49.7 percent of Indian families own two-wheelers. The most number of families that own a car and a motorcycle reside in Goa. 45.2 percent of Goa’s households own a car whereas 86.7 percent of households own a two-wheeler.
The all India value increased from 6 percent in 2018 to 7.5 percent for four-wheelers whereas the two-wheeler percentage increased from 37.7 percent in 2018 to 49.7 percent. The second state whose households have four-wheelers is Kerala at 24.2 percent and the second state whose households have two-wheelers is Punjab at 75.6 percent.
It is quite interesting that Goa’s households own a car and a motorcycle. Now, we can understand why Goa is facing issues with parking and road space. They are also considering cutting down on the registration of new cars.

Goa considering cutting down on the registration of new cars
Mauvin Godinho, Goa’s Transport Minister said that they are discussing reducing the number of registrations of new cars in Goa. The discussion was done with the cabinet minister. The reason behind reducing the number of registrations is that Goa’s road infrastructure is facing a lot of stress and the congestion is increasing continuously.
What is happening because of this is that parking space is decreasing. This leads to more traffic on roads which the general public has to face. According to the Goa government’s Economic Survey report for 2021-22, the state has a population of around 16 lakh and there are 15.27 lakh registered vehicles.
The transport minister, Mauvin Godinho said, “There was a suggestion yesterday when all the ministers met, not to give more permits for cars because there are too many cars on the road. There is no parking. They come and park in anybody’s neighbourhood, blocking people from coming out of their house. You see what is happening in and around the airport. They park all over, near the Joggers park, they can’t come out of their houses. This situation cannot be allowed beyond a certain point. I will be reviewing the whole thing”
In Goa, on average around 57,000 vehicles are registered by state transport authorities every year. Most of these vehicles are two-wheelers at around 70.81 percent. The Jeeps, cars and taxis account for 22.77 percent.
The number of accidents on Goa’s roads has also increased. This has happened because the lockdown is no longer in effect and more and more tourists are visiting Goa. They often rent out scooters and motorcycles to travel in the city. They are not familiar with the route and the traffic and are dependent on the pillion to guide for the route. Many of them end up having an unfortunate accident.
The minister said, “As far as two-wheelers are concerned, they are another big problem. Rent-a(bike) is another big problem which is developing because they were just given without application of mind. I want to inform you that in the last eight months I have not cleared a single new licence and I am not going to clear. The tourists use these bikes, they do not know the roads. The person riding pillion guides the driver using GPS and there are accidents. There have been maximum fatalities. Do we want to call tourists and kill them on the roads with no steps being taken”
