Honda Activa Electric Launch Date Revealed by Company CEO

The Activa electric will have a fixed battery and a top speed of 50kph, revealed HMSI MD and CEO Atsushi Ogata.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) will introduce its first electric scooter by March 2024, the company’s president, MD and CEO Atsushi Ogata revealed at the launch event of the Activa H-Smart. The first Honda electric scooter will be locally developed and manufactured electric version of outgoing Activa. The Activa electric scooter will be followed by an electric scooter with a new platform and swappable battery.

Commenting on the development of this forthcoming electric offering, Ogata stated, “We are locally developing our electric two-wheelers in close coordination with Honda’s teams in Japan, and we aim to be ready with the first scooter around the same time next year – definitely within FY 2023-’24,”

The electric Activa will become the first EV from Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India. This is hardly surprising seeing the popularity of the top-selling automatic scooter. First launched in May 1999, the two-wheeler has seen several generations and revised iterations. Its popularity can be gauged by the fact that it has often outsold most of its rivals put together. The all-electric version is sure to benefit from this legacy and even pave way for more EVs from HMSI.

The second electric scooter from Honda is likely to be based on an all-new platform and offer a swappable battery feature. It would also offer a stronger performance instead of playing second fiddle to an ICE sibling. “For the last few years, it was not an urgent matter for the company to invest into an EV programme from a business point of view, but with market expectations growing, we are going to get into the EV segment next year,” Ogata said.

Activa EV Range and Top Speed

The Activa electric scooter will be based on the current Activa petrol scooter with a new electric powertrain bolted on and will boast of 50kmph top speed. Honda will follow this up with the introduction of another electric scooter which will come with swappable battery technology.

According to a report by Autocar, HMSI will build electric motors in-house and will set up battery-swapping stations across all its 6,000 consumer touch points in India before the rollout of its second electric scooter. Interestingly, the Japanese giant still believes that conventionally powered scooters will remain popular in the Indian market for the foreseeable future as they offer a higher range per refuel.

The CEO of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India also announced during the introduction of the new Activa H-Smart that the company, which continues to dominate the scooter market with a market share of 56%, plans to further solidify its position in the motorcycle market by introducing a 100 cc bike the following month. The company anticipates that the bike will aid in solidifying its position in the rural and semi-urban areas.
