Following the recent tragic events of its EV two-wheelers catching fire, the Gurugram based electric scooter manufacturer Okinawa Autotech has issued a recall of 3,215 units of its EV scooter model – the Praise Pro. The EV maker is the first electric producer in the country to initiate such a voluntary recall and has stated that this recall has been made to check and fix any issues related to the batteries.

Okinawa in its official statement for this recall said, “The batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any damage and be repaired free of charge at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India.” Okinawa further added, “The electric 2W maker is working closely with the dealer partners to ensure that the repair experience is as per the convenience of its customers, for which the vehicle owners will be contacted individually,”

Additionally, media reports have also stated that this initiative is a part of the company’s comprehensive power pack health check-up camps and the recall has been made in the view of the recent instances of fires of the company’s electric two-wheelers. Okinawa also stated that “This voluntary campaign is in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company’s long-standing commitment to customer safety”

In the very recent incident of an Okinawa electric two-wheeler going up in flames, a vehicle sitting in the showroom of Okinawa Autotech in Tamil Nadu burnt down the entire dealership. There were no injuries reported from the scene of the fire, and the fire was extinguished with the cooperation of the locals. However the tragedy, on the other hand, has heightened the discussion about electric vehicle safety.

Earlier last month on March 26, 2022, an Okinawa electric scooter also caught on fire in Vellore, Tamil Nadu and unfortunately, in this incident, the lives of a man and his 13-year-old daughter were claimed. The reason for the fire according to police sources was quoted as a short circuit and negligence by the user while charging the vehicle.

Okinawa in its official statement concerning the matter said, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family. As per credible sources, the media, and the local authorities, it is an evident case of short circuit due to negligence in charging the vehicle. We will wait for the complete investigation to unfold,” The company further added, “Our customers’ safety is extremely important to us, and we adhere to the highest quality standards in our electric scooters,”

The Gurugram based EV maker at the time also released a statement in which it said, “As a responsible brand, time and again, we have been coming forward and taking a lot of initiatives to create awareness and educate our customers on the proper usage of electric 2-wheelers and about the possible hazards that they could experience in case of any negligence in taking proper care of the battery of the vehicle,”

Since the start of summer this year, as of yet, there have been six EV fires documented in various parts of the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has requested an investigation into recent incidences of electric scooters catching fire, following a series of ongoing cases of EVs blowing up in smoke around the country.
