Ola Electric to launch a low cost scooter on Independence Day – Bike Kharido

[ad_1]

Ola Electric is all set to unveil India’s ‘greenest electric vehicle’ on Independence Day – 15th August 2022. The ‘greenest EV’ will essentially be a new electric scooter, in line with what we’d speculated last week. The new electric scooter’s ‘greenest EV’ credentials could have to do with Ola Electric figuring alternate materials for the battery pack. Another approach could be related to the production facility of the new electric scooter – by opting for either solar or wind energy for bulk of production energy needs. Whatever be the case, we’ll find out on the 15th of August, which is barely a week away. For now, here’s a teaser that Ola Electric has released in the run up to the official unveil.

As the teaser indicates, the new electric scooter is likely to be based on the Ola S1 line-up. We expect a low cost offering, that’ll serve as an entry level variant, and will be priced lower than Rs. 1 lakh. The bulk of India’s electric scooter volumes comes from the sub-Rs. 1 lakh segment, with the likes of Hero Electric and Okinawa dominating this segment. A low cost version of the Ola S1 – with an attractive design, a reasonably powerful electric motor and a battery pack that promises 80-100 kilometers of true range – could just be the volume booster that the doctor ordered.

Ola Electric’s scooter sales have been on a decline for the past few months. Given the fact that Ola Electric has an installed capacity to build 1 million electric scooters each year from its sprawling 500 acre factory, slowing sales will cost the company a lot. Apart from the temporary production pause, Ola Electric is also said to be considering downsizing its work force as a means of re-aligning production to demand.

In such challenging times, a new low cost electric scooter aimed squarely at bagging big volumes will give Ola Electric and its production facility a strong shot in the arm. Currently, the Ola S1 Pro is powered by 3.97 kWh battery pack powering an electric motor that puts out 11 Bhp-58 Nm. Maximum claimed range is a segment best 181 km. Production of the cheaper Ola S1 has been suspended indefinitely. Clearly, there’s space for a low cost offering, which is what we’re likely to see on the 15th of August.
