Comprehensive Redesign of Engine and Performance
At the core of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM lies a newly engineered 398cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine. While maintaining the same displacement as its predecessor, nearly every component has undergone significant redesign. Innovations such as titanium intake valves and hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves have been implemented to improve efficiency and longevity. The engine is rated to deliver 38 hp at 8,000 rpm and 27 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm.
Accompanying the new engine is a ride-by-wire throttle system featuring a 42mm electronic throttle body, a 10-hole fuel injector, and a reconfigured airbox and exhaust system. Both models are equipped with a five-speed transmission complemented by a slipper clutch for enhanced gear transitions.

The traction control system includes two standard modes along with a gravel (G) mode, which permits controlled wheel spin during off-road excursions. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard, with options to deactivate the system for the rear wheel or both wheels on the DR-Z4S, and rear-only ABS deactivation on the DR-Z4SM.
