Yamaha Nmax 155, Grand Filano unveiled at Bharat Mobility Expo 2024

Yamaha currently offers three scooters for sale in India. Among them, two scooters, namely the Fascino classic scooter and the RayZR sporty scooter, are equipped with a 125cc mild hybrid engine. The third scooter in Yamaha’s lineup is the Aerox 155, which shares its liquid-cooled powertrain with the R15 motorcycle, making it Yamaha’s flagship scooter in India.

Considering the increasing demand for scooters, Yamaha might have plans to introduce more scooters in the Indian market. Recently, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024, Yamaha showcased two new scooters: the Grand Filano 125cc and the Nmax 155cc. How do the Grand Filano and Nmax 155 differ from the Fascino and Aerox?

To begin with, the Grand Filano and Fascino share a common neo-retro design concept that pays homage to the classic scooter theme and proportions. Both exude an air of elegance and sophistication in their own unique ways. Equipped with a 125cc engine, both models deliver comparable performance figures of 8.2 PS and 10.3 Nm.

In terms of componentry, both scooters feature RSU telescopic front forks, a 12-inch alloy wheel at the front paired with a 90/90-12 tubeless tire, a rear 10-inch alloy wheel fitted with a 110/90-10 tire, and a swingarm-mounted rear suspension, among other features.

Additionally, there is an optional front disc brake available, and the Fascino impressively weighs in at just 99 kg.

Grand Filano

Grand Filano stands out due to its resemblance to an enhanced version of Fascino. This is primarily due to the inclusion of additional features and conveniences, as well as a more sophisticated and luxurious overall design. While design preferences may vary, feature comparisons tend to be more objective, and in this case, it is evident that Grand Filano offers a superior feature list compared to Fascino.

One notable aspect is the upgraded instrument cluster of Grand Filano, which incorporates a TFT screen. Additionally, it includes a hazard light, an external fuel filler cap, front storage behind the apron, and a keyless start system with a smart key, all of which are absent in Fascino.

These added features make Grand Filano a compelling option for Yamaha to potentially introduce in the Indian market, especially considering the growing demand for 125cc premium scooters.

The Aerox 155 and Nmax 155 also share similar features. However, the Nmax 155 stands out with its slightly more premium design, resembling a proper maxi scooter. Both the Yamaha Nmax 155 and Aerox 155 are equipped with the same 155cc single-cylinder engine, which is also found in the R15 motorcycle.

In contrast to the Grand Filano’s simple 125cc unit, the 155cc engine in these scooters boasts advanced features such as liquid cooling, a DOHC setup, a 4V head, and Yamaha’s renowned VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology.

These enhancements contribute to improved performance, delivering a peak power of 14.75 bhp and a peak torque of 13.9 Nm. Yamaha’s decision to showcase these scooters from its global portfolio in India suggests a potential launch, considering the growing demand for sporty and premium scooters.

Currently, the Aprilia SXR 160 is the only direct competitor to Yamaha’s 155cc scooters. However, Hero is also eager to secure a share of this market segment with its Xoom 160.
