Before the update, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Tripper Dash Maps and music features were inactive, but they became functional after the latest version was installed.

Royal Enfield is embarking on a new technological era with the introduction of the New Himalayan 450. This remarkable offering from Royal Enfield is undoubtedly their most advanced and feature-rich creation to date.

Among the exciting technological features is the innovative Tripper Dash, which recently underwent an FOTA update on February 21st. Let us delve into the workings of this cutting-edge technology.

Prior to discussing the enhancements brought by the new FOTA update, it is essential to comprehend the functionality of Tripper Dash and its previous state.

Royal Enfield has developed a fresh circular TFT display exclusively for the New Himalayan 450, which will also be incorporated into other RE motorcycles such as the recently observed testing of Scram 650 in India.

To facilitate call and notification alerts, maps, and even music controls, there exists a dedicated app for Android and iOS that oversees the transmission of data between the smartphone and the Tripper Dash unit.

When I initially acquired the Royal Enfield New Himalayan, the Tripper Dash posed as one of the primary drawbacks I encountered with this motorcycle, which I also highlighted in our initial impressions review.

The reason being its non-functionality. Despite successfully establishing a Bluetooth connection with both Android and iPhones, the maps and music control features never functioned. Subsequently, Royal Enfield released a couple of updates for their mobile app, and the company also provided a FOTA update specifically for the Tripper Dash.

Has this FOTA update fixed the issues?

The FOTA update for my Royal Enfield app was notified to me on my phone on February 21, 2024. Unfortunately, I was unable to install the update until February 25 as I was away from my motorcycle.

This update consisted of five different software patches and took approximately 10 minutes to complete the installation process. I am pleased to inform you that my unit has been functioning quite well since the update.

Both the Maps and Music Control features are now operational, which was not the case previously. However, it is important to note that they are not without their flaws.

There is still room for improvement on Royal Enfield’s part, and I am hopeful that the company will address these issues in the near future. In fact, within just one day of observing their functionality, I have already noticed some glitches in both Google Maps and Music Controls.

Although they do work intermittently, it is still an improvement compared to not working at all. When they are functioning properly, Google Maps offers four different zoom settings for trajectory view.

As for the music controls, I am able to adjust the volume, skip forward to the next song, or go back to the previously played song by utilizing the Up, Down, Right, and Left buttons on the 5-way clickable D-pad.

Do features work consistently?

When the navigation feature is activated and the map data is transferred to Tripper Dash, the phone’s display remains illuminated inexplicably. Despite having large hands, I have a preference for compact phones, and my small Samsung S Series device also comes with a small battery.

In order for Maps and Music to function on Tripper Dash, my phone’s Wifi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Location services, and 1000+ Nits screen must remain active at all times, resulting in rapid battery drainage within a few hours.

There is a Type-C charger conveniently located beneath the handlebar for charging my phone while it is mounted on a mobile stand. However, this setup has introduced new challenges as the phone is now exposed to direct sunlight, causing the screen brightness to reach 100%.

Consequently, the phone overheats, causing Google Maps and music to cease functioning. I wish that Tripper Dash came equipped with a built-in GPS, compass, and accelerometer, as well as a small internal storage capacity for storing offline route data obtained from the app.

Alternatively, it would be beneficial if the phone’s screen could automatically turn off when connected.
